Radical retropubic prostatectomy is the method of operation which over decades has been developed as standard practice for the treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer tumors. The doctors of the Martini-Klinik have classically operated on more than 17,000 patients in the nine years since our founding – more than in any other clinic.
Over the years this method has been further developed, refined and improved. Principally, the operation is carried out with loupes and with a headlight system. The resulting improvement in sight on the surgery area decisively influences – together with the expertise of the surgeon – the quality of the nerve preservation (and therefore also the potency preservation) as well as the continence through the full preservation of the sphincter muscle which controls this function. All the Martini-Klinik surgeons are recognized world-wide as experts in this method, and some have carried out several thousands of prostate operations.
Many surgeons from Germany and abroad chose to be trained on location in the Martini-Klinik in the operational details developed there. In particular, this applies to the methods which spare the neurovascular bundles and the sphincter muscle.
