Quality Management at the Martini-Klinik

The patient's well-being and medical success are our top priorities. Notwithstanding exceptional successes in treatment, continual improvement is the aim of the Martini-Klinik. For this reason, differentiated quality management has been established which does not exclusively serve the control of results, but primarily the further development of all persons involved. The gathering of exact data on the treatment results of our patients is a part of this system. The quality management system in use is certified pursuant to  DIN EN ISO 9001:2008 and is supervised by an interdisciplinary QM-group. Anke Renter and Dr. Imke Thederan are the contact persons.

The Martini-Klinik orientates itself according to the guidelines of recognized specialist institutions and actively participates in their further development. The clinic's management defines specific quality targets, which are formulated in a manner that it can be checked if and to which extent they have been implemented. The Martini-Klinik stands for the combination of optimal, comprehensive and up-to-date care for patients based on the latest findings as well as research and teaching on prostate cancer. Patient security is an issue of utmost importance to the entire University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf as the following example serves to illustrate: the digital patient files, which guarantee a fully comprehensive documentation system, as well as the central checking and assignment of medication, preventing any false distribution.

Value-based healthcare

Since 1992, we have regularly asked our patients to participate in a survey in order to find out about the quality of our results. It focuses on quality which is important to the patients: Quality of life in the form of the cure rate, continence and potency. The results of theses surveys have helped us to continually improve surgical therapy. The precise preparation and preservation of the urethral sphincter muscle has thus facilitated the continence preservation in significantly more cases, and the use of the NeuroSAFE-technique has made it possible to spare the nerves controlling potency in substantially more cases.

In addition to research, this data also serves our in-house quality control. Generally, a surgeon does not know how his patients have progressed years after the operation as their further treatment is carried out by their external resident specialists. Our surgeons at the Martini-Klinik use the data to check and compare the results of their treatment with regard to potency and continence of their patients. We take corrective action in the event of even slight anomalies: The subsequent operations performed by the respective surgeon are supervised in order to perfect each action. This strict but very effective method employed for the welfare of the patient is unique worldwide.

Quality regulations and certifications

At the end of 2007 and as one of the first prostate cancer centers, the Martini-Klinik obtained from the Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft e.V. (German Cancer Society) a strictly controlled certification. The required specialist demands for this certification are checked annually by the independent certification institute OnkoZert. Prof. Dr. Thorsten Schlomm acts as the coordicator for the Martini-Klinik.

Since 2005 and pursuant to the German Social Code, each hospital which is provided for by the German hospital plan (so-called Plankrankenhäuser) are obliged to draft and publish a "Structured Quality Report". The purpose of these reports is to create an even higher degree of transparency - for the patients as well as for the health insurance companies. As a private clinic the Martini-Klinik is not under this obligation. However, it voluntarily compiles the data of the prostate cancer center in a structured quality report.
